What Is 18mm OSB?
18mm OSB 3 is a moisture-resistant panel purposed for structural use in a variety of internal and external applications including roofs, floors and walls.
18mm 3 OSB comprises multi-layered softwood flakes that are laid in specific orientations and hot-pressed to form a single versatile panel.
Its mish-mash composition of varying thicknesses and wood species renders it the ‘Spam’ of the construction industry.
It is this same composition, however, which adds to its strength and durability, making it a great alternative to plywood, ideal for shelving, sheds, display boards and other domestic uses, as well as commercial applications such as subfloors and roof decking.
18mm OSB Board Applications
Suited for a variety of exterior and interior applications, such as wall sheathing, roofing and flooring applications, OSB excels in its load-bearing and structural applications, as well as long-term site hoardings due to its moisture-resistant properties.
As well as being a heavyweight load-bearing construction board, OSB boards are also a great product for domestic and decorative applications.
We recommend 18mm OSB 3 for the following applications:
- Building a garden shed or a summer house - great flooring or wall sheathing solution
- In shop fittings - to provide racking or exhibition stands for heavy items
- Wall sheathing
- Flooring & roofing applications
- Roof decking
- Site hoarding
- Sarking applications

18mm OSB Board for Humid Conditions
Unlike MDF and other interior laminate sheet materials, 18mm OSB is able to hold its own in humid environments, making it ideal for house building.
While the OSB2 board is only suitable for dry conditions, OSB3 board can withstand more challenging conditions. However, this does not mean that the boards are completely waterproof, so as a rule of thumb we always suggest adding further weather protection if you plan to use it for permanent outdoor use.
You can do this by adding weather-proof exterior paint. Follow the exterior paint with a wood waterproofing sealant and allow 12-14 hours for it to dry before installing it - you can add a second coat if required.
OSB Meaning
The 'OSB' in its title (short for Oriented Strand Board) makes reference to its manufacturing process: which sees wood strands strategically oriented and compressed together with adhesive resin.
